Feel free to discuss this decision with our doctors, whether over the phone or
during an appointment.  We want you to feel as confident in your decision as
possible.  The doctor can discuss any related diagnostics results with you
concerning your pet (when appropriate) and help you determine what you might

xpect as the illness progresses or as your pet ages.  We want your pet to enjoy
quality time, not just quantity, and we will try to help you keep your pet
comfortable until it is time to make a decision.  When you feel you are ready, we

often provide sedation for your pet so that the time is less stressful for both of
you.  We may also elect to place an IV catheter to aid in the process.  We will not
rush you during the process, as we know it is a painful time for you.  You will
the option to stay for the entire process, for just the sedation  (until your
pet falls asleep)
, or, if you prefer, you can elect to not be present.  If you do not
wish to be present, you can be assured your pet will not be alone—we take
special care to make sure your pet passes with reassuring and loving words.
You will also be given the options of taking your pet home with you for burial or

cremation (if you would like a private cremation with your pet’s ashes returned
to you, you can contact Peaceful Pastures to make arrangements).
Final Services and Grief Consultation
Finding someone to talk to after the loss of your pet can sometimes be difficult.
Some people feel ashamed to grieve over an animal; your pet may not be human
but your grief is real and you should not feel ashamed.
A member of your
family that shares your life and love cannot be replaced and you cannot expect
life to go back to usual right after your loss.

If you need someone to talk to, there is a Pet Loss Support Hot line:

This is available Tuesday through Thursdays from 6 p.m. To 9 p.m. Eastern Time
You can also visit their website for helpful articles and advice
